Not sure if you want to take the plunge into 3D computer design? Join us for both
an overview of the software and a look at the exciting new process of 3D prototyping. Find out how you can
incorporate 3D computer modeling into your work - what's the learning curve like, is it more than a
presentation tool - and how are the solid models are made.
Arthur Young-Spivey, an instructor in the Parsons Product Design Department and associate

The Potent Legacy of Mid-20th Century Scandinavian Furniture Design

June 12, 2002, 6:00 - 8:00
Bard Graduate Center, 38 West 86 Street, Manhattan
Free to FNY members. $35 general, $25 students.
Scandinavian Modern furniture design continues to influence contemporary furniture designers,
and not just in the superficial use of blond woods or minimalist treatments. Rather, the complex amalgam of seemingly
contradictory approaches that informed the work of pioneers such as and is seen again in the combination of economy
of form with sensuousness of shapes and materials, of mass production techniques with handicraft, of striking new
ideas with revered traditions. Considering the legacy of this heritage from different viewpoints, a design historian,
a gallery owner, and a practicing designer will explore the social and cultural forces that brought about the
distinctive approach in the Nordic countries, the lasting value of the original work, and the influence of
Scandinavian Modernism on furniture designers today.
Speakers:
Ali Tayar is a principal of Parallel design Partnership Limited, with recent
projects including Pop restaurant and a line of furniture for ICF Group.
David Shearer is the founder of Totem Design, which represents numerous leading Scandinavian designers and manufacturers.
Lily Kane is the Research Associate at R-20th Century,a gallery specializing in mid century modernism.
Derek E. Ostergard is Associate Director and Founding Dean of the BGC, where he been responsible for many exhibitions and
their accompanying catalogues, among them The Brilliance of Swedish Glass, 1918-1939: An Alliance of Art and Industry.
The panel will be moderated by Jonah Zuckerman, vice president of FNY.
