Furniture New York is a non-profit organization whose mission is to unite, educate, and advance the furniture and furnishings community of the greater New York City area. By fostering quality and creativity, we seek, to further our individual businesses and our industry as a whole. Our membership is made up of designers, craftspeople, decorators, architects, teachers, and students.
Furniture New York was founded 1990 with a mission to support the design community in the Greater New York City area. One of the earliest efforts was to secure an exhibit space at IMM Cologe, in Cologne Germany, at a discounted rate. The mission of the organization has continued to evolve over the years with an emphasis on fostering community and creating new opportunities for the membership.
The membership is made up of designers, craftspeople, decorators, architects, teachers and students. The discussion area on this website allows us to interact with fellow New Yorkers or design enthusiasts from the other side of the world. In addition, our members interact with each other through a secure forum where we share ideas, resources, experiences, techniques - and even mistakes. Some of our best information comes from our peers.
We are committed to fostering the design community in New York. We create programs throughout the year covering a wide variety of topics such as business issues, materials and techniques, design and history. Informative programs, panel discussions, guided tours of museum and gallery exhibits, and member presentations are some of the ways we educate ourselves, each other, and the design community.
Past events include seminars on e-commerce; product licensing; resins and their design and fabrication possibilities; designing and sourcing custom hardware; and environmental sustainability issues. We have also co-sponsored an annual series of Member Presentations with Pratt Institute and Parsons School of Design, aimed at sharing our design ideals and their related business realities with design students. Events are frequently co-sponsored with other local organizations such as the Municipal Art Society, Bard Graduate Center, and local museums.
Many of our members exhibit in trade shows. Furniture New York helps by purchasing a large blocks of space. Our members can then take advantage of significant group discounts on their individual booth spaces and be part of a large and visible group presence. We have made arrangements in the past with shows such as International Contemporary Furniture Fair, IMM Cologne, the Architectural Digest Home Design Show, the Philadelphia Furniture Show, the San Francisco Gift Show, and Fine Furnishings Providence.
Through co-op advertising, members have shared ad space in magazines such as Interior Design, and achieved savings of as much as 40% over what they would otherwise pay individually. The growth of Furniture New York can only increase these possibilities.
Furniture New York is what its members make it - join our vibrant community and find new ways for all of us to improve our businesses, our art, and our lives.
